Metal roofs are one of those materials that are lauded by construction experts both inside and outside of the United States, so much so that they became one of the highlights of the Toronto Fall Home Show in October 2013. The Globe and Mail did a story about it and boasted one of its most important traits: “Metal roofs are often touted as the environmentally friendly choice, and for good reason: They typically last 50 years or more, double the lifespan of asphalt shingles, and are made from mostly recyclable materials, whereas asphalt shingles wind up in a landfill.”

Indeed, this is pretty much the essence of what most roofing companies would say about metal roofs; Performance Roofing, which touts metal roofing in Maine cities like Portland and Portsmouth as their primary service, is one such company. Aside from their longevity and environmental benefits, metal roofs can also boast reliability and durability, especially when faced with terrible weather conditions, which translates to fewer roof replacements or repairs. Even business establishments are getting into metal roofs, as about 20 percent of all commercial roofing systems in the country have been made from metal since 2004.

Metal roofs can be roughly classified based on what material they were built from. Many are built from aluminum, which resists corrosion fairly easily and requires little maintenance, while others are constructed using stainless steel, an alloy with a protective layer of zinc that allows it to resist rust. Stainless steel roofs generally last longer than aluminum roofs, although the latter can also keep a house cool in the summer since they can reflect heat and sunlight much better than steel. Better temperature regulation can translate to energy savings, which in turn can translate to better environmental sustainability.

Energy-efficiency is in fact one of the most important characteristics that advocate groups like the Sustainable Portland Taskforce look for in homes. Though much progress has been made since 2006 to turn Maine into an environment-friendly state, the Taskforce still encourages households to practice “green building” by opting for construction materials that have the least impact on the environment and recycling as much waste as possible during construction itself. These two criteria can be met by working with a reputable Maine metal roof company.

In the end, metal roofs simply have so many benefits that homeowners like you won’t need to wait 50 or more years just to see if their investment has paid off. What’s not to like?

I have 20+ years experience in the roofing industry. Throughout that time I have worked with numerous amounts of clients on the design, decision making, and pricing involved in their projects. I also help oversee all day to day operations. Throughout our time in business we have gone through many changes but one thing that will never change is our devotion to customer satisfaction. One of our top sources for referrals is word of mouth from our previous customers. That alone says a lot about the quality of the service our customers receive.
